We Trace Lost Crypto

Yes — lost and stolen cryptocurrency can usually be traced. Every Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDT transaction is permanently recorded on a public blockchain, so stolen funds can be followed from your wallet to the exchange, mixer, or service that received them. Tracing is what makes recovery possible. Speed matters most: the sooner a trace begins, the more likely the funds are still somewhere they can be frozen. Tracing is not a guarantee of recovery.

How crypto tracing works

Crypto tracing, also called blockchain forensics, is the process of following stolen cryptocurrency across the blockchain to find where it ended up. Investigators map every hop from your wallet to the destination address, then identify which exchange or service controls it. When stolen funds reach a regulated exchange that enforces KYC rules, law enforcement can request a freeze and identify the account holder.

  1. Collect the evidence. Your transaction hash (TXID), the scammer's wallet address, and the dates and amounts you sent.
  2. Follow the funds on-chain. Every transfer is public and permanent, so money can be traced through wallets, bridges, and mixers.
  3. Identify the off-ramp. Most stolen crypto is eventually cashed out at an exchange. That is the point where it can be frozen.
  4. Report and act. A trace report supports filings with the FBI IC3, your national police, and the receiving exchange.

How much money is actually recovered?

Recovery odds depend far more on how you paid than on who you hire. These are typical outcome ranges, not promises:

Payment method Typical recovery rate Time window that matters most
Credit card 60 to 80 percent Chargeback window, often 120 days
Bank or wire transfer 30 to 50 percent First 24 to 48 hours (recall)
Cryptocurrency 10 to 25 percent Before funds are cashed out or mixed
Warning: recovery scams target scam victims. No legitimate firm can guarantee that your crypto will be recovered, and no legitimate firm asks for a large upfront fee to "unlock" or "release" your funds. If someone contacts you promising guaranteed recovery, that is a second scam. Never pay a fee to recover a fee.

Common questions about tracing lost crypto

Can stolen crypto be traced?

Yes. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and most major cryptocurrencies run on public blockchains where every transaction is permanently visible. A tracer can follow your funds from the moment they left your wallet to the address holding them now, even through several transfers.

Can traced crypto actually be recovered?

Sometimes. Tracing shows where the money went; recovery depends on whether it landed somewhere it can be frozen, such as a regulated exchange. Roughly 10 to 25 percent of stolen crypto is recovered. If funds were already withdrawn to cash or laundered through a mixer, recovery becomes unlikely.

How fast do I need to act?

Immediately. The first 24 to 72 hours are the most important, because stolen crypto is usually moved and cashed out quickly. Bank wires can sometimes be recalled within 24 to 48 hours. Acting in the first week gives you a materially better chance than acting a month later.

What do I need to start a trace?

You need the transaction hash (TXID) of each payment you sent, the wallet address you sent it to, the amount and date, and any messages, website, or platform the scammer used. Screenshots of the platform and your conversations strengthen both the trace and any police report.

What does ScamWebGuard charge to trace lost crypto?

Nothing for the initial review. ScamWebGuard connects victims with licensed blockchain forensics specialists (CNC Intelligence) who assess your case for free. They generally take on cases involving losses above 5,000 US dollars, because smaller cases rarely justify the investigative cost.
